This weekend workshop will delve into the core principles of yoga practice from the perspective of the body’s anatomy, physiology and neurology.
A key feature of Desikachar and Krishnamacharya’s methodology is its central focus on the breath. All the details of practice — alignment, spinal action, mental focus and even spiritual aspiration — are anchored to the process of breathing. While there is ample foundation for the traditional pranic dimensions of these teachings, they have not traditionally been well-supported from a Western anatomical perspective. Leslie Kaminoff has devoted the past four decades to an investigation of this very topic, and will present his latest findings through a series of practices blended with a richly detailed lecture/demo format that combines audio-visual material with illustrated handouts, experiential exploration and group inquiry.
We will view the principles of yoga through the lenses of breath anatomy, spinal release/support, and bandha (both dynamic and static) in highly interactive sessions. Participants will be invited to bring their interests, questions and reactions into the practice and ensuing dialogue. Come prepared both to have some of your deepest insights anatomically validated and your assumptions challenged.
